The capital of The Isle of Man, Douglas, is situated on the south-east of the Island at the mouth of the River Douglas. The town is a bustling centre for business, transport and also shopping and entertainment. Due to its location, the area has provided safe harbourage for many centuries and it continues to be home to the island's main harbour today. Douglas Bay includes sandy beaches as well as an impressive promenade that runs almost the whole length of the beachfront. Douglas has a thriving tourist industry and when it comes to finding the right hotel Douglas has something for everyone.

There is archaeological evidence that the island has been occupied for many thousands of years and its history and involvement with mainline Britain is fascinating. The Isle of Man, is not part of the United Kingdom, although its foreign relations and therefore its defence is the responsibility of the UK Government. The Island is self governing and has its own government and parliament for domestic matters. Douglas is home to the award winning Manx Museum where details of this island's unique history can be explored in full.

As a result of the recession, the UK hotel industry has seen a dramatic increase in the need for family hotels. More and more people are choosing to stay in the UK rather than travel abroad for the annual holidays and the industry has responded well to this rise in need for family friendly accommodation. When booking a family holiday, your accommodation needs will differ greatly to booking a romantic break for two or even a trip with friends. When going away with the kids, you want somewhere where you can feel comfortable and not have to worry ever time your child speaks above a whisper. If you are looking for a family hotel Douglas has a great deal of choice with many hotels providing well equipped and appointed family accommodation as well as gardens with play areas and in some cases, even babysitting services.

As well as family hotels, the town also has a number of smaller and more exclusive boutique style hotels. Complete with leisure facilities including gyms and hot tubs and a few with their own casinos and fine dining restaurants. Many of the original Victorian hotels in the area are still in use today. These days however the magnificent architecture houses sympathetically modernised rooms and furnishings.

Agriculture and fishing which were once the mainstays of the island's economy are now in decline, whilst tourism, manufacturing and off shore banking have become key contributors to the Island's economy. The Manx Government has also been promoting the Island as a great location for film making and a large number of films have been shot on the Island since the mid 1990s.

If travelling to the Island on business, then Douglas is a great place to stay. As the capital, it is at the heart of the main finance and business districts and also very close to the Island's airport. If you particularly want a business oriented hotel Douglas will not disappoint. You will find a number of high quality hotels offering Wi-Fi access, business centres and even meeting and conference facilities.

There is a lot to see and do in Douglas, a trip along the seafront in one of the town's horse trams is sure to appeal to everyone. Once a common sight across the UK, these are the only trams of this type still running. They run from the Sea Terminal to the Manx Electric Railway from Spring to Autumn.

During May / June time, the population of the island increases and it becomes a somewhat noisy place as the International Isle of Man TT (Tourist

Trophy) Race is held. The race is run on a time trial basis on public roads.

Rest assured however that the roads are closed for the event although this does make it a little more challenging than usual to travel around the island. The first race was held in 1907 and for years it has been one of the most prestigious motorcycle race in the world. The race creates a carnival atmosphere and draws many crowds who flank the circuit.

Whatever the reason for your trip to Douglas, be it a family holiday, a business trip or even to watch the Motorbike race, this town has something to suite every style and budget.
